Paste any text and press play to hear it read aloud. Choose from the voices on your device, then set the speed and pitch to suit you.
Ready when you are
Your text is read by the voices already on your own device, so nothing is uploaded. Voices differ between Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone.
This tool reads text aloud in your browser. It does not create an audio file to download.
How to use text to speech
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Pick a voice from the list. English voices are listed first.
- Move the speed and pitch sliders if you want a faster, slower, higher or lower voice.
- Press Play. Use Pause and Resume to stop and carry on, or Stop to end.
What it is good for
- Proofreading. Hearing your writing read back makes missing words and clumsy sentences easier to catch.
- Listening to long articles or notes while you do something else.
- Checking how a script or speech sounds before you record it.
- Practicing pronunciation in another language, if your device has voices for it.
Why the voices change between devices
The voices come from your own device, not from our site. Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and Chrome each ship with their own set. That is why the list looks different on your phone and your laptop, and why nothing you type has to leave your device.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download the speech as an MP3?
No. This tool uses the speech feature built into your browser, which plays sound but cannot save it as a file.
Why is the voice list empty?
Some browsers load voices a moment after the page opens. Wait a second or reload the page. If it stays empty, try Chrome, Edge or Safari.
Is there a word limit?
There is no limit on our side. Some browsers stop after a long block of text, so for very long pieces, play them in parts.
