Enter a web address to check the meta tags on any live page. The tool reads the title, meta description, robots, canonical and Open Graph tags, shows a search result preview, and points out tags that are missing, repeated or likely to be cut in Google.
Enter the address of any public page, then press Check page.
How to use the meta tag checker
- Copy the address of the page you want to check, such as a blog post or product page.
- Paste it into the box and press Check page.
- Read the results. Red marks need fixing first, amber marks are worth a look, and green marks are fine.
- To write new tags, open the Meta Tag Generator, then add them to your page or your SEO plugin.
What the meta tag checker looks at
- Title tag: found or missing, how many, and its length in characters and width in pixels.
- Meta description: found or missing, how many, and its length.
- Robots meta tag and X-Robots-Tag header: whether either one tells Google not to index the page.
- Canonical link: whether it points to the page itself, to another address, or appears more than once.
- Viewport tag, which helps a page fit phone screens.
- H1 headings on the page.
- Open Graph and X card tags, used when the page is shared on social media.
- Language, charset, hreflang links and the keywords tag, when the page has them.
Check titles and meta descriptions
The tool also works as a title tag checker and a meta description checker. Google sets no fixed character limit for either one. Long titles are cut when they are too wide for the screen, so the checker measures each title in pixels, the same way the Meta Tag Generator does. Descriptions over 160 characters are marked amber, because Google may shorten them to fit the screen.

Reading the results
- Red: a problem to fix, such as a missing title or a noindex tag on a page you want in Google.
- Amber: worth a look. The page may be fine, but check the tag is set the way you want.
- Green: the tag is in place.
- Grey: for information only.
Your privacy
Most Tool Holdall tools run only in your browser. This one cannot, because a browser is not allowed to read the code of another website. Our server loads the page for you and sends back the tags. We do not store the address you check or the results. The site you check will see one visit from our checker.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I see different tags from my page source?
The checker reads the HTML the server sends. Tags added later by JavaScript, for example through a tag manager, will not show here. Google can run JavaScript, so it may still see them.
Why can some pages not be checked?
Some sites block automated visits, need a login, or take more than 15 seconds to answer. The checker also refuses private and local addresses. Very large pages are read up to the first 2 MB.
Does Google use the keywords meta tag?
No. Google does not use the keywords meta tag. The checker lists one if it finds it, but you do not need to add it.
How many pages can I check?
You can run 20 checks every 10 minutes. The limit keeps the tool quick for everyone.
