How Many Sentences in a Paragraph? Rules for Essays and the Web

Quick answer
Most paragraphs have 3 to 5 sentences. Purdue OWL gives three to five or more sentences as a rule of thumb, but there is no fixed rule. A paragraph is one idea, so it can be a single sentence or run longer when the idea needs it.

Teachers, editors and style guides all give slightly different answers to how many sentences belong in a paragraph. This guide sets out what the main writing guides say, how the answer changes for essays, websites, news and emails, and how to tell when it is time to start a new paragraph. How many sentences in a paragraph? What the writing guides say
Two of the most used university writing guides in the US take slightly different views. Purdue gives a number to aim for. UNC says the number matters less than the idea.
| Source | What it says about length |
|---|---|
| Purdue OWL | Aim for three to five or more sentences. Keep one main idea per paragraph, and expect about three typed paragraphs per page. |
| UNC Writing Center | Length does not decide what a paragraph is. A paragraph can be a single sentence or a group of sentences, as long as they form one unit around one idea. |
You can read both in full: Purdue OWL on paragraphing and the UNC Writing Center guide to paragraphs.
So three to five sentences is a useful starting point, not a law. A paragraph is finished when its one idea is fully made and explained.
Paragraph length by type of writing
| Type of writing | Typical paragraph | Why |
|---|---|---|
| School and college essays | 3 to 5 sentences or more | Each body paragraph makes one point and backs it up with evidence and explanation. |
| Blog posts and web pages | 1 to 4 sentences | Most people read on phones, where a long block of text fills the whole screen. |
| News articles | Often 1 or 2 sentences | News style keeps paragraphs short so readers can scan. UNC notes that journalistic writing often uses one sentence paragraphs. |
| Fiction | Any length | A new paragraph starts each time a different character speaks, and short paragraphs can speed up the pace. |
| Emails | 1 to 3 sentences | Short paragraphs make the request and any next step easy to spot. |
These ranges are common habits, not rules. If your teacher, editor or style guide sets a length, follow that.
How many words is a paragraph?
Paragraph length in words depends on how long your sentences are. The table shows the range you get if sentences average 15 to 20 words, which is common in everyday writing.
| Sentences | At 15 words each | At 20 words each |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | 45 words | 60 words |
| 4 | 60 words | 80 words |
| 5 | 75 words | 100 words |
| 6 | 90 words | 120 words |
So a standard essay paragraph of three to five sentences is often somewhere between 45 and 100 words. Paste your own text into the word counter to see your real numbers.
What goes in a good paragraph
The UNC Writing Center describes a paragraph as unified around one controlling idea and well developed with evidence and explanation. In a typical essay paragraph that looks like this:
- Topic sentence. States the one idea of the paragraph. It often comes first, but it can sit in the middle or at the end.
- Support. Explains or expands the idea.
- Example or evidence. A fact, quote or case that backs the idea up.
- Explanation. Says how the example proves the point. UNC stresses that no example should be left unexplained.
- Closing or link. Wraps up the idea or leads into the next paragraph.
Count those parts and you can see why many essay paragraphs land at about five sentences.
When to start a new paragraph
- You move on to a new idea or point.
- A different person starts speaking in dialogue.
- You move to a new step, place or time.
- The current paragraph has grown so long that the reader may lose track of the point.
- You want one sentence to stand out on its own for emphasis.
If a paragraph holds two separate ideas, split it. If you have a run of very short paragraphs on the same idea, Purdue suggests joining them or adding detail.
