Do QR Codes Expire? Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

Do QR Codes Expire? Static vs Dynamic QR Codes

Quick answer

Static QR codes do not expire. The link or text is stored in the pattern itself, so the code works for as long as the link does. Dynamic QR codes can stop working, because they send people through a redirect run by a QR service. If the plan ends or the service shuts down, the code goes dead.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

StaticDynamic
Where the link livesInside the codeOn the QR company's server
Can it expire?NoYes, if the plan or service ends
Can you change the link later? No, make a new codeYes
Scan trackingNoUsually yes
CostFreeOften a monthly plan

Why a static QR code might still stop working

  • The link breaks. If the web page is moved or deleted, the code still scans but leads to an error page.
  • The code is too small or blurry. Print it large enough and test it from the distance people will scan it.
  • Low contrast. Dark code on a light background scans best.
  • No blank border. QR codes need a clear margin around them, called the quiet zone.
  • Damage. Scratches, folds and stickers can hide too much of the pattern.

How to tell if a QR code is dynamic

Scan it with your phone camera and look at the link before you open it. If it starts with a QR company's short domain rather than the business's own site, it is most likely dynamic. If you made the code yourself, check whether the service asked you to sign up or pick a plan.

How to make a QR code that does not expire

  1. Open our free QR code generator. It makes static codes only.
  2. Paste your link or type your text.
  3. Choose a size: 300, 600 or 1,000 pixels square.
  4. Download the PNG and test it with two or three phones before you print.

Because the link is stored in the code, there is no account, no redirect and nothing that can be switched off later.

A short history

The QR code was developed by a team at DENSO WAVE led by Masahiro Hara and released in 1994. DENSO WAVE kept the patent rights but said it would not exercise them, which is why anyone can make and use QR codes for free. QR Code is a registered trademark of DENSO WAVE.

Frequently asked questions

Do free QR codes expire?

A free static QR code does not expire. Some “free” generators make dynamic codes that stop working after a trial, so check which type you are getting.

Can I change the link on a static QR code?

No. The link is part of the pattern. Make a new code, or point the old link at a page you can update.

How long do QR codes last?

A static code lasts as long as the printed code is readable and the link still works.

Do I need an app to scan a QR code?

Most phones can scan QR codes with the built-in camera app.
