Count every character in your text, then check it against the limit you are writing to. Pick a preset such as an X post or a text message, or set your own limit, and a bar shows how much room you have left.

How to use the character counter
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Choose a limit from the list, or pick Custom limit and type your own number.
- Watch the bar. It is green while you have room, turns amber when you are close, and red when you go over.
- Read the line under the bar for the exact number of characters left or over.
Limits you can check against
- X post: 280 characters for standard accounts.
- Text message: 160 characters for a single standard SMS.
- LinkedIn headline: 220 characters.
- Instagram caption: 2,200 characters.
- Page title and meta description: 60 and 155 characters. These two are common guides, not fixed rules. Google cuts titles and descriptions by width on screen, not by a set number of characters.
- Any custom number you type in.
Characters, spaces and words
The big number counts every character, including spaces and line breaks, because that is how most apps and forms count. The tiles underneath also show characters without spaces, words, lines and spaces on their own.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes, in the main count, because most apps count them. If your form counts without spaces, use the No spaces tile.
Do emojis count as one character?
Not always. Many emojis are stored as two or more characters, so they can use more of your limit than you expect.
Is my text stored?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
