Enter the price and the percent off to see what you pay and how much you save. Add a second discount or your sales tax for the real total at the checkout.
Work out the sale price
$80.00 minus 25% is $60.00.
Find the percent off from two prices
The second calculator works the other way. Give it the original price and the sale price, and it tells you the percent off.
How to use the percent off calculator
- Type the original price.
- Type the percent off, for example 25 for 25% off.
- If there is an extra discount, such as an extra 10% off at the register, type it in the third box.
- Add your sales tax rate if you want the price you pay at the checkout.
- To find a discount from two prices, use the second calculator lower down.
What it shows
- The price you pay, with or without sales tax.
- How much you save in dollars.
- The true total discount when two discounts are stacked.
- A plain sentence that shows the working.
The formula
Sale price = original price × (1 − percent off ÷ 100). For $80 at 25% off, that is $80 × 0.75 = $60, so you save $20.
Percent off from two prices = (original price − sale price) ÷ original price × 100. For $120 down to $90, that is $30 ÷ $120 × 100 = 25% off.
Why 20% off plus 10% off is not 30% off
An extra discount is taken from the price that is already reduced, not from the original price. $100 at 20% off is $80. Another 10% off $80 is $72. You saved $28, which is 28% off, not 30%.
In the US, sales tax is added after the discounts, so this calculator adds tax last.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out 30% off in my head?
Find 10% by moving the decimal point one place left, then multiply by 3. For $45, 10% is $4.50, so 30% is $13.50 and the sale price is $31.50.
Is 50% off the same as buy one get one free?
Only when you buy two items at the same price. Buy one get one free gives you two items for the price of one, which is 50% off the pair.
Does the calculator know my local sales tax?
No. Type your own rate. Sales tax rates change from state to state and city to city.
