    How to convert AVIF to PNG

    What is an AVIF file?

    AVIF is an image format made by the Alliance for Open Media. It makes small files, so many websites now use it to load faster. Older photo editors, Office apps and some upload forms do not accept it yet, which is when a PNG copy helps.

    Your browser has to be able to open AVIF for this tool to work. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari can.

    Why is the PNG bigger than the AVIF?

    AVIF throws away detail to keep files small. PNG keeps every pixel it is given, so the file grows. Converting does not bring back detail that was lost.

    Will an animated AVIF stay animated?

    No. You get a still PNG of the first frame.

    It says my browser cannot open the file. What now?

    Update your browser, or try Chrome or Firefox. Very old browsers cannot read AVIF.
