How Many Pages Is 1,000 Words? Single and Double Spaced
Quick answer
1,000 words is about 2 pages single spaced and 4 pages double spaced. That assumes a 12 pt font such as Times New Roman, 1 inch margins and US Letter paper, which gives roughly 500 words on a single-spaced page and 250 on a double-spaced page.

Those numbers are a rule of thumb, not an exact count. Your font, spacing, margins and how often you start a new paragraph all move the result up or down. The chart below gives a quick guide, and the rest of this page explains what changes it.
Words to pages chart
| Words | Single spaced | Double spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | ½ page | 1 page |
| 500 | 1 page | 2 pages |
| 750 | 1½ pages | 3 pages |
| 1,000 | 2 pages | 4 pages |
| 1,500 | 3 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,000 | 4 pages | 8 pages |
| 2,500 | 5 pages | 10 pages |
| 3,000 | 6 pages | 12 pages |
| 5,000 | 10 pages | 20 pages |
All figures use 500 words per single-spaced page and 250 per double-spaced page, with 12 pt Times New Roman and 1 inch margins.
What changes the page count
- Font. Arial and Calibri are wider than Times New Roman, so the same text takes more space.
- Font size. Moving from 12 pt to 11 pt fits more words on each page. Moving to 14 pt fits fewer.
- Line spacing. Double spacing halves the words on a page. 1.5 spacing sits in between.
- Margins. Wider margins mean shorter lines, so fewer words per page.
- Paragraphs and dialogue. Short paragraphs and lines of dialogue leave blank space at the end of each line.
- Headings, lists, tables and images. Each one takes up room without adding many words.
How many words is a 5 page paper?
A 5 page paper is about 1,250 words double spaced or 2,500 words single spaced. Most schools ask for double spacing, so 1,250 words is the usual target. A 10 page paper works out to about 2,500 words double spaced.
If your teacher gives a page count and you write in a document with a cover page, headings or a reference list, check whether those pages count. Many teachers count only the body of the paper.
